Real Estate in India - October, 2008

The cirsis in India`s real estate scector will cause a much needed course correction
by the industry. It would start building homes for which there is a genuine demand
and not just for a small minority of speculators. Much of the housing shortage in
India is of the low inccome end segment wit prces usually strating at INR 60 lakh
plus in the big cities. The exuberance in this catagory was largely speculative,
driven by cheap money. With high leverage fuelled supply of cheap money coming
to an end, the demand for expensive housing has idsappreared overnight.
As the market reverts to fundamentals, the disnonnect betwen demand and supply
has disappreared overnight.

According to Akamai Technologies’ latest State of the Internet report, India has currently 2.1 million unique IPs, which means the country has 0.002 IPs per capita or two unique IP addresses per 1,000 people. An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique 32-bit number, which identifies a computer in an IP network. The State of the Internet report also reveals that the percentage of broadband connections from India with speeds above 5 Mbps (high broadband) and 2 Mbps (broadband) are 0.6 per cent and 4.6 per cent respectively. The percentage of connections with speeds less than 256 Kbps from India is 26 per cent. Sanjay Singh, vice president, Global Services and Support, Akamai Technologies, has said, “Our global network of 36,000 servers across 70 countries enables us to offer unique insight into how the internet is being leveraged around the world. While the report notes that India has just two unique IPs per 1,000 people on average, we believe India’s internet penetration will significantly increase in the coming years, thanks in part to the economic boom and increasing IT adoption.”

Gold, as a commodity currency, shares a strong negative correction - as much as 85%  - with the US dollar. Hence, keeping a watch on the dollar is crucial for someone who tracts gold prices.
The dollar has been slipping since 2002. It has witnessed some pullbacks since late July against major currencies like the euro and sterling. This strength in the dollar was party due to decline in the US trade deficit from late 2007 till early 208.The dollar has again shown a rising trend  from April 2008 due to sub-prime related credit problems. The tredn is now expected to continue on the back of huge infusion of public funds to rescue the US banking sector. This is once again likely to raise the US trade deficit and put the pressure on the dollar.
